very very good post

I am not posting this to bash at all but to me it seems that the oil mod done to the cases is a better way to spend money for somebody willing to split cases

I know i pay $50 to get the oil mod done.  and you could take the other money and buy a Wr crank.  split the cases and do a crank swap and oil mod and still be cheaper then the 07 oil mod parts.

once again not a bash just something i have been thinking about since the 07 mod seems to be gaining popularity

thanks for the great tech article

Very true. $50 is alot cheaper than $300.00+. But the more I looked into the 07 side case modification, I found that the oil pumps prior to 2007 did not provide sufficient pressure at lower RPMs if a new oil passage was opened up (ie: the old oil mod). Also, the other oil mod utilized unfiltered oil. Not that I think that would matter to much, but that may pose a risk of some dirt (or whatever) lodging in the added oiler and clogging it up. Kind of like a peice of sand lodged in a main jet.....you know? Which by the way, I read that alot of people were using a Mikuni 87.5 main jet as their oiler on the old oil mod.

Also this was performed on a motor that remained in the frame. Only the clutch side case was removed. No splitting of the cases here.

But I am not a certified motorcycle mechanic. By all means go with what you know. B)

That is my main reasons for wanting the 07 modification!

I can get them from the service manual. Are you looking for some in particular?

The only thing that needed to be torqued was the oil pump bolts (allens actually). Theyre at 7.2 ft-lbs.

Go easy on tightening EVERYTHING, those castings will let go long before the bolts will.

Swizzle write up! I was actually just thinking about doing the oil mod the other way by myself, and after reading this, I will pay the extra! I notice in the pic that the new oil pump has one less tooth on the gear than the old one. Where does the nozzle spray into? I didnt see any pics of the nozzle.

It's hard to explain where it sprays into until you have the side case off. It sprays up into where the red arrow is pointed, you'll see what I am talking about.

Good catch on the teeth count with the new erl pump. It all makes sense now. Less drive teeth means the pump gets spun faster (like a smaller tooth sprocket), therefore it pumps a higher erl volume.

I should've caught that during the install.....but I ate too many paint chips as a kid. Again, nice catch......have a beer on me. :bzr:

Hope these pics help..

I realize this is prolly over kill, but has anyone thought about doing the case oil mod to their already oil modded engines?

I have a sparks high volume oil pump so I wonder if it could handle both as far as oil pressure goes?

My 04 uses the o ring for the side case, and 87.5 mikuni (small round) like so many others. My engine builder and I did it without splitting the cases, but the top end was off for a piston refresher.

I've been told that if you already have the older oil mod, you can't put the 07 oil squirter stuff on.

I have the kit (thanks PDR!) and I'm ready to get into it. Can someone please tell me the size of the nut on the clutch? Sandornothing posted:

He had some question marks after the size. I don't want to open it up till I have everything on hand. I know I don't have sockets that big.

Thanks in advance

2 Questions.:

1) the seal that has the washer and cir-clip, does the spring in the seal go towards the motor or away?

A: install the seal so the flat smooth part is in the back and you can see the spring, then the washer, then cir-clip

2) I know the clutch nut can come off with an impact. Don't you still need the clutch tool to re-install/re-torque the clutch nut?

A: Yes, I was told to just use the impact to put it back on..I didn't like that idea. On the way to the store I showed my Dad a pic of the Motion Pro clutch tool and he made me one out of vise grips. I torqued it to spec.

Thanks

ETA** While I was in there I replaced the impeller shaft and water pump bearing. They are cheap enough, you are there anyway.

On the 2007 sidecase, is the piece that sticks out below the water pump on the outside of the case just for a breather line?
